Do Eat With Your Emotions?

Do Eat With Your Emotions?

Weight Loss Hypnosis

Is binging your number one problem? When you are alone and relaxed do you eat anything and everything. It doesn't matter what it is -- you feel have no self-control. It doesn't matter how I'm feeling because either way I always eat. Please help!

First, realize you are very much in control. It sounds like you are using food to meet needs and handle feelings that you don't know how to deal with in a healthier manner.

Yes, it feels "out of control" as "emotional eaters." It often feels like the jelly doughnuts sprout wings and cram themselves down your throat. Other times it feels like an alien presence has invaded the decision-making center of our brains, making us do stupid things against our will. We criticize ourselves for being so weak and powerless, when what we really want is to be thin and healthy.

Let's get real. Fattening foods don't really fly. Eating requires a decision to eat. Eating requires a deliberate act. Therefore, it's impossible to be "out of control" of our eating.

Yes and no.

To understand this dilemma, understand that although eating does require a conscious decision to eat, it is influenced by both conscious and unconscious factors. We're not always aware of the feelings and issues that drive us to binge. We can be in such internal conflict that while our right hand is stuffing our face the left hand tries to stop it. We are bewildered with this vicious battle and end up feeling like a loser every time.

To understand this we also have to recognize the emotional power of food. Food is unique. It gets right down into our belly where we have all those "gut-wrenching" feelings and soothes turmoil. For many, food is a primary emotional coping technique. It distracts. It calms. It's dependable. And it is almost always readily available. No wonder, then, that so many of us feel out of control in the face of stress. We don't know what else to do besides eat.

When we spend all day meeting everyone else's needs, it's often the case that after the kids are no longer demanding our time and energy, we sit down and "give" to ourselves with food. It's crucial to avoid buying into the destructive and disempowering notion that we are "out of control" by recognizing that eating requires a choice. If we tune into the lurking feelings and issues that affect our judgment, then we can make a coping choice that might be more direct and ultimately, more satisfying than overeating.

Only then can we truly be in control.

Try an eating strategy called "empowered eating." By becoming an empowered eater you will be more aware of what you eat and why you eat it, which will help you develop more stable eating patterns. Get started with the following three steps.

Step 1: Take responsibility for your eating. Be accountable. Specifically, find an eating plan that can fit into your lifestyle. You must recognize that no one can do this for you. You must take the lead.

Step 2: Eat with a purpose. View all eating as goal-directed. An eating goal may be physical, like nourishing the body, or it may be emotional, like coping with psychological issues.

Step 3:Be mindful of your eating behavior. Pay attention. Be fully aware of your feelings and the issues that are associated with your eating. Being an empowered eater doesn't mean you never again overeat because of emotional stress. It does mean, however, that when you do overeat, you understand why. And understanding the "why" behind your choices will make it easier for you to develop new, healthy habits.

Fish For Healthy Weight Loss

Fish For Healthy Weight Loss

I suppose your thinking...I have heard it all now, fish for a healthy weight loss. Well, it is the Omega-3 fatty acids that we are after. These include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are precursors to eicosanoids, which reduce inflammation throughout the body. What you may not know is that fish do not actually produce these incredibly healthy fatty acids, they accumulate them through their diet via microlgae or by eating other prey for the predatory fish, which ate the microalgae.

The predatory fish include mackerel, lake trout, flounder, salmon and albacore tuna, however, there is the bad to that come with a predatory fish omega-3 fatty acids. Because they are at the top of the food chain, they will also be dining on other fish that accumulate bad substances. The FDA even recommends limiting your intake of certain predatory fish species, such as the tuna, shark and swordfish. The toxic chemicals consumed include mercury, PCB's and chlordane. The best Omega-3 products are actually algae-based, or called vegaterian DHA Omega-3 products.

In recent years, fish oil supplements have come under heavy scrutiny. The FSA in the UK reported in 2006 that the level of PCB exceeded the new European maximum for several fish oil supplement brands. This actually requried the temporary withdrawl of some product from the shelf. The Fish Oil Standards program, a voluntary review board process created at the University of Guelph was created to help address the concerns with the contaminated fish oil supplements.

The recognition of the importance of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids have been made by nutritionists. These fatty acids are grouped into two primary categories...Omega-3 and Omega-6. Omega-6 fatty acids promote inflammation, blood clotting and tumor growth, while Omega-3 acids are to reduce the inflammation, etc.

Balancing the acids has been found to be important for a healthy weight loss diet. Since most in the industrialized West consume far too much Omega-6 enriched foods, i.e. fast foot, produced foods, etc., the consumption then of Omega-3 acids becomes clear. Because eating Omega-6 enriched foods is much easier to come by, we tend to miss out on a balance with Omega-3 acids. This is why Omega-3 supplements are so crucial to us; they help balance out our poor diet.

Healthy Weight Loss Tips For Every Overweight Person

Healthy Weight Loss Tips For Every Overweight Person

Unfortunately, there are only two fundamentals of successful, healthy weight loss...dieting and exercise. Unlike the claims we hear about losing 7 inches in 7 days and the fat burning pill that will get you to your desired weight in 9 days are not realistic. Healthy weight loss is achieved by how well and committed you are to eating right and exercising.

First, let's address the exercise part...

There is an endless amount of exercise-related programs on the market and for most, they work. I realize there are many who may be intimidated by wearing fitness clothes, etc., however, there are some options. You can start with an in-home exercise video/DVD program. The problem is you may find yourself losing motivation and that is where the fitness centers come into play. They offer group sessions with rooms full of others in the same situation.

This still may not be the type of exercise for you. Simple walk around the park, a bike ride or running may be more motivational and interesting. Regardless of what you do, it is an evil-necessity.

You can further your fitness level by integrating exercise into your daily activities, such as taking the stairs instead of elevator, or rather than driving around a parking lot looking for the closest spot, park at the back and walk your way up.

Let us now discuss the most important component of healthy weight loss

Just as exercise, there are tons of diet programs out there, but again, finding the proper one for you is critical. But to start, we could look at some alternative methods.

What about colon cleansing? There is a variety of effective types to cleanse your body. Do not get confused though, this is not a replacement for a healthy weight loss program, but our colon plays a vital role in the digestive process. At some point, the colon will not be able to process it all and it starts to accumulate.

Another method for losing weight without following a program is to start eating more, smaller meals. Many think that cutting out meals is the way to start, but the opposite is actually true. This will increase your metabolism which helps burn fat even during those times you are not exercising.

Losing Weight With The Glycemic Index

Losing Weight With The Glycemic Index

The Glycemic Index is a ranking system for carbohydrate rich foods, created to help people manage their blood sugar levels. The GI number signifies how quickly a food triggers a rise in blood glucose (sugar).

If the Glycemic Index is only relevant to carbs, then what are carbs, anyway? Carbohydrates are one of the body's three sources of fuel, the other two being protein and fat.

But, not all carbs are created equal, thus, the rating system. There are good carbs: complex carbs, which usually have a low GI rating, and not so good carbs: simple carbs, which usually have a high GI rating.

Foods with a low GI rating break down slowly during digestion, resulting in gradual release of glucose into the bloodstream. Foods with high GI numbers, however, break down quickly, causing an undesirable surge of blood glucose into the bloodstream and resulting in a surge of insulin.

Regular consumption of high-glycemic foods leads to a greater chance of developing a number of serious health problems, including insulin resistance, type II diabetes, obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. A low-glycemic diet helps to control weight, lower blood cholesterol levels, maintain energy and promote overall good health.

Knowing how the body processes carbs can help you make better food choices, promoting easier weight loss and disease prevention. Naturally, many of the naughty foods we love turn out to be High Glycemic.

Sugar, white flour, white rice, and potatoes are just a few of the foods we should avoid. That may not sound like many until you think about how many foods are made primarily with white flour and/or sugar. That's right, all of our favorites: cakes, cookies, breads, dough, mashed potatoes, ice cream, etc..

The good news is that most substitutions are relatively painless, so that you won't feel like you are giving up too much. White potatoes can be swapped for sweet potatoes, white flour products can be swapped for 100% whole wheat products, and white rice can be swapped for brown or basmati rice.

Sugar is another matter entirely, as there are very few low glycemic sweeteners out there, but one that I know of is Blue Agave Syrup. It's really tasty and most supermarkets carry it.

For the most part, though, sugar and other simple carbs should really be limited. The damage that they are doing to our bodies is just not worth it. In my personal coaching practice I like to teach the 80/20 principal:

Stick with your healthy diet 80% of the time and allow yourself to indulge 20% of the time. It's a perfect balance that will let you reap the rewards of your good choices and still allow all of those fun foods that you love.
