Weight Loss is Only One of the Benefits From Walking
May 5, 2010
The National Weight Control Registry studied over 5,000 people who lose weight, approximately 66 pounds on average and managed to keep it off for over 5 years. They were asked about their exercise routines and habits and the biggest losers were the walkers. Yes, you know that everyday thing most of us learn to do sometime after 12 months. Walking not only is the easiest exercise to do but it is proven to be the best. It does not require any special equipment except a pair of walking shoes and the ability to make yourself do it.
Other Reasons to Walk:
1. Keeps your mind sharp. Walkers have bigger brains! A study done at the University of Illinois revealed that walkers had enhanced memory capacity and reaction time. Another study showed that people over 65 who walked at only a moderate pace for 5 miles over a period of a week were 27% less likely to develop dementia as compared to couch potatoes.
2. Boosts your mood. For you gals, walking just 25 minutes a day helps prevent hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, and headaches. That may be enough incentive for the man in your life to walk with you and he’ll lose weight too!
3. Fights off colds. Improves immune system. Lowers blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides.
4. Increases your energy level. A St. Louis University School of Public Health study showed that adults who walk 5 miles a week report to have more energy, feel healthier, and have more self-confidence.
5. Improves sleep. A study of women age 60 and older showed that a 9 minute daily walk decreased the times of wakefulness during the night. They also slept 48 minutes longer each night and showed fewer sleep related problems like nightmares or sleep walking.
6. Reduces pain. A University of North Carolina study showed that arthritis sufferers decreased their pain by 25% with low impact exercise and you can’t get a lower impact exercise than walking.
7. Helps you live longer. Study after study has shown that walking helps fight the cellular inflammation that’s known to cause life-shortening diseases like heart disease, cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.
8. Curbs cravings. Walking may increase dopamine levels, a hormone that produces feelings of satisfaction and pleasure.
Walk to look better, walk to wear that new swimsuit, walk to fit in those skinny jeans, but most of all, walk to live longer and enjoy that extra time you bank for yourself. It’s inexpensive and so easy to do. Just put one foot in front of the other and throw yourself out the door!
